# Update an artifact

> Change selected fields without replacing the artifact.

Use `registry__patch_artifact` to change selected fields on an artifact.

* Required inputs: `artifact_id` and `patch`.
* Optional inputs: `session_id` and Gateway's `rationale`.
* Effect: write; idempotent.

Omitted fields are preserved. A field set to `null` is cleared, and nested
objects merge by key. Content bytes and `workspace_id` cannot be changed.
