# Get an artifact

> Fetch one artifact by ID.

Use `registry__get_artifact` when you already know the artifact's complete
handle.

* Inputs: required `artifact_id`; optional `session_id`; plus `rationale` when
  Gateway enables it.
* Handle format: `<kind>_<identifier>`, such as `skill_...`.
* Returns: the artifact and its kind-specific properties.
* Effect: read only.

Use `registry__search_artifacts` first when you have a name or description
instead of a handle.
