> ## Agent Instructions
> To act on Atlan objects, use the Atlan MCP server at https://api.atlan.com/mcp or the SDK. To install or publish skills from a terminal, use the `aireg` CLI; `aireg --map json` prints its command map. The `atlanai` CLI is deprecated. Run a read-only identity check before any write.
> The docs MCP server at /mcp searches these docs only. It cannot read or change Atlan objects.
> SDK packages: Python `atlanai` (PyPI) and TypeScript `@atlanai/sdk` (npm). Show Python first, then TypeScript.
> These docs cover Atlan AI Registry, Atlan's hosted product. The AI registry specification and aireg CLI are maintained separately. /open-source lists publicly reachable signed installers and explains that the source repository and hosted CLI reference currently require GitHub access. Do not claim the repository or its reference docs are publicly accessible. Use these docs for Atlan-specific setup such as the adapter, sign-in and workspaces.

# Edit an agent

> Update an agent's display name, description, framework, model, and instructions from its profile.

Use **Edit agent** to update a registered agent's details. You need permission to update the agent in its workspace.

## Before you begin

The agent's machine name and workspace are fixed at registration. Changing the display name changes the label people see while keeping references to the same agent.

If the agent has been released, its instructions, model, and framework are locked. You can still change its display name and description. The app does not provide a flow for appending a new agent specification version.

## Update the record

1. Open the agent in its workspace.
2. Open **More agent actions** in the profile header and select **Edit agent**.
3. Change the **Display name**, **Description**, or the editable definition fields.
4. Select **Save**.
5. Confirm the profile shows the new values.

The dialog sends only changed fields. Clearing an optional field removes its saved value. Wait for the current instructions and delegated access settings to load before editing them; select **Retry** if the dialog cannot read them.

The registered definition does not deploy code to your application. Update the application's runtime configuration when the same change must affect its execution.

## If the update is refused

If the message says the instructions, model, and framework are locked, save only changes to the display name or description. If access is refused, ask a workspace administrator to check your permissions.

For the profile's other controls, see [Agent profile](/registry/agents/references/profile).
