> ## Agent Instructions
> To act on Atlan objects, use the Atlan MCP server at https://api.atlan.com/mcp or the SDK. To install or publish skills from a terminal, use the `brain` CLI; `brain --map json` prints its command map. The `atlanai` CLI is deprecated. Run a read-only identity check before any write.
> The docs MCP server at /mcp searches these docs only. It cannot read or change Atlan objects.
> SDK packages: Python `atlanai` (PyPI) and TypeScript `@atlanai/sdk` (npm). Show Python first, then TypeScript.
> These docs cover Atlan Agent Registry, Atlan's hosted product. The open-source agent registry specification and its CLI (`brain`) are documented, released and maintained in their own repository; /open-source on this site links to it. Answer general specification or `brain` command questions from the project's own docs, and use these docs only for Atlan-specific setup such as the Atlan adapter, sign-in and workspaces.

# Open source

> The open-source agent registry specification and CLI, and how Atlan Agent Registry relates to them.

Atlan has open-sourced a specification for agent registries, together with a
CLI that works with any registry that follows it. Both are in one repository,
under the Apache 2.0 license, with their own documentation and release notes.

This site documents **Atlan Agent Registry**, Atlan's hosted product. The
open-source project is documented, released, and maintained in its own
repository. This page explains how the two relate and where to find each.

## What the project includes

* **The registry file specification.** A standard layout for a registry as
plain files, so any client can read any registry that follows it, wherever
it is stored: a folder, a Git repository, or a static host.
* **The CLI, `brain`.** The client for the specification. It manages
registries and installs their artifacts into coding agents.
* **Example registries and checks** for testing a registry against the
  specification.

Both the specification and the CLI are pre-1.0 and may still change. Their
names may change too; this page always has the current links.

## How Atlan Agent Registry relates

Atlan Agent Registry is a managed registry. It implements the same
specification and adds what an organization needs to run one: approval queues,
roles and SSO, search, and traces and evals.

Because it implements the specification, the open-source CLI works with Atlan
Agent Registry too. It connects through the Atlan adapter, a signed module
Atlan releases separately. Atlan Desktop installs both for you. To set them up
yourself, see [Use the CLI with Atlan](/tools/brain).

| What it is | A specification and a CLI | A hosted product |
| Who runs the registry | You, on storage you already have | Atlan, as a [multi-tenant service](/platform/references/architecture) |

| Review before release | Your own process, such as pull requests | Approval queues and the Registry security scan |
| Evidence of use | Not part of the specification | Sessions, traces, usage, spend, and evals |

## Releases and changes

The open-source project announces its releases in its
[release notes on GitHub](https://github.com/atlanai/agent-registry/releases).
The [Atlan changelog](/changelog) covers Atlan Agent Registry only, so it does
not list releases of the specification or the CLI.
