> ## Agent Instructions
> To act on Atlan objects, use the Atlan MCP server at https://api.atlan.com/mcp or the SDK. To install or publish skills from a terminal, use the `aireg` CLI; `aireg --map json` prints its command map. The `atlanai` CLI is deprecated. Run a read-only identity check before any write.
> The docs MCP server at /mcp searches these docs only. It cannot read or change Atlan objects.
> SDK packages: Python `atlanai` (PyPI) and TypeScript `@atlanai/sdk` (npm). Show Python first, then TypeScript.
> These docs cover Atlan AI Registry, Atlan's hosted product. The AI registry specification and aireg CLI are maintained separately. /open-source lists publicly reachable signed installers and explains that the source repository and hosted CLI reference currently require GitHub access. Do not claim the repository or its reference docs are publicly accessible. Use these docs for Atlan-specific setup such as the adapter, sign-in and workspaces.

# Manage groups

> Create local groups and grant teams access to shared workspaces.

Groups let you manage a set of people together and grant that group access to
shared workspaces. Open **Settings → Organization → Groups**. Creating and
editing groups requires the organization's group-management permission.

## Create a local group

1. Select **Create group**.
2. Enter a unique, descriptive group name, such as `Platform engineering`.
3. Select **Create group**. Atlan opens the new group's details.
4. Under **Add member**, choose an organization member and select **Add member**.
Repeat for the other people in the group.

Use **View group** to open an existing group. Review its members, add or remove
people, or use **Rename group** and **Save name** to change its name.
Membership changes can take a short time to propagate to effective access.

## Grant workspace access

Open the shared workspace's settings and add the group to its access list with
the intended workspace role. Review the group grant alongside individual grants:
a person can have access through more than one route. See [Manage workspace
members](/administer/workspaces/how-tos/manage-members).

A group supplied through directory synchronization is identified separately from
a local group. Manage synchronized membership at its source; the local controls
are available only for locally managed groups.

## Delete a local group

See [Delete a local group](/administer/users/how-tos/delete-group) to remove a
group and review the workspace access affected by it.
