> ## Agent Instructions
> To act on Atlan objects, use the Atlan MCP server at https://api.atlan.com/mcp or the SDK. To install or publish skills from a terminal, use the `brain` CLI; `brain --map json` prints its command map. The `atlanai` CLI is deprecated. Run a read-only identity check before any write.
> The docs MCP server at /mcp searches these docs only. It cannot read or change Atlan objects.
> SDK packages: Python `atlanai` (PyPI) and TypeScript `@atlanai/sdk` (npm). Show Python first, then TypeScript.
> These docs cover Atlan Agent Registry, Atlan's hosted product. The open-source agent registry specification and its CLI (`brain`) are documented, released and maintained in their own repository; /open-source on this site links to it. Answer general specification or `brain` command questions from the project's own docs, and use these docs only for Atlan-specific setup such as the Atlan adapter, sign-in and workspaces.

# Desktop app errors

> Symptoms, causes, and fixes for desktop app sign-in, updates, deferral, uninstall, and task notifications.

These are errors from installing, updating, and uninstalling the Atlan desktop app, and from its task notifications. Start from the symptom you see: each section below starts from one of them.

## App cannot sign in or download components

The app opens but cannot sign in, or cannot download its components.

### Cause

Your network blocks a host the app needs.

### Solution

1. Compare your firewall or proxy rules with [Network requirements](/administer/desktop/references/network-requirements).
2. Allow the missing hosts.
3. Restart the app and sign in again.

***

## Update asks for administrator credentials

On a managed Mac, every update attempt asks for administrator credentials.

### Cause

The MDM installed the app in `/Applications` owned by root, and the user is a standard user, so the app's self-update cannot overwrite it.

### Solution

1. If the app updates itself, run the ownership script in [Let standard users self-update](/administer/desktop/how-tos/updates#let-standard-users-self-update) once per device, as root, after a user session exists.
2. If your MDM owns updates, push each new `.pkg` from the MDM instead.

***

## App ignores update deferral

The app updates more often than the `UpdateDeferralDays` cadence you set.

### Cause

The app honors the key only when it arrives as a managed preference through MDM, not when it is set locally. A required security release also overrides the cadence with an in-app warning.

### Solution

1. Deploy `UpdateDeferralDays` in the `com.atlan.dashboard` domain as an MDM managed preference.
2. Check whether the device shows a security-floor warning; that update is required.

***

## Uninstall script exits

The uninstall script stops with `must run as root` or `unknown argument`.

### Cause

The script must run as root, and it accepts only `--user`, `--dry-run`, and `--keep-data`.

### Solution

1. Push it from your MDM as a root script, or run it with `sudo`.
2. Check the options against [Uninstall desktop app](/administer/desktop/how-tos/uninstall).

***

## Task notification does not appear

A coding agent finishes a task, but no notice appears.

### Cause

Atlan notifies only when no screen in Atlan shows the session, and macOS may not allow notifications from Atlan. A task you stop yourself sends no notice.

### Solution

1. Leave the session's page before you switch to another app.
2. On macOS, allow notifications from Atlan in System Settings.
3. Give the agent another task and confirm the notice appears.
