# Workspace roles and access

Each workspace has its own member list. A person's role determines what they can
do inside that workspace.

| Role       | Access                                                                                                        |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Owner** | Full control. Atlan sets this role for the workspace creator, and it cannot be assigned from the member list. |
| **Admin** | Manage members and workspace settings. Admins can also use and contribute to the workspace. |
| **Member** | Use and contribute to the workspace. |
| **Viewer** | View the workspace without making changes. |

Atlan combines workspace roles with organization-level permissions when deciding
which controls to show.

## Change someone's role

Workspace owners and admins can change another member's role from the **Members**
card. See [Manage workspace members](/admin/workspaces/manage-members) for the
steps.

Your own role is read-only in the member list. Ask another workspace admin to
change it.

## Join a workspace

When a workspace allows self-join, Atlan shows **Join workspace** on its profile.
Joining adds you with the **Member** role.

If the button is absent, ask a workspace owner or admin to add you. Atlan does
not provide a request-access workflow for that workspace.

## Leave a workspace

1. Open the workspace in **Settings**.
2. Open the workspace action menu beside **Edit details**.
3. Select **Leave workspace**.
4. Confirm by selecting **Leave**.

After leaving, the workspace no longer appears in your Settings list. A
workspace admin can add you again.

<Warning>
  The last admin cannot leave, be removed, or be changed to another role. Assign
  the Admin role to another member first.
</Warning>

## Personal workspaces

A personal workspace has one owner and no member-management controls. It cannot
be joined, left, or deleted.
